VeruTEK’s demulsifying formulations were evaluated in the laboratory on oils that came into a Florida port-based used oil recycling/wastewater treatment dual facility over the course of 4 months. The facility received a variety of oils including # 6 fuel oils primarily from cargo ship fuel tanks. Before approaching VeruTEK the plant’s chemists had to select a demuslifier from a range of low tech chemistries based on each batch of oil that came in. They achieved adequate separation with some samples, but were unable to break some emulsions even with high heat. The numerous chemistries increased storage costs and screening times, the high treatment temperatures added to operational costs and poor demulsification increased costs on the water treatment side of their facility.
VeruTEK conducted lab scale screening tests with the various oil emulsions in order to find a product that would address a wide range of oils. Based on the lab results (below) VeruTEK selected two products to meet the facilities needs; AFX 70 and AFX 74.
The oil recycling plant uses these two products to treat a wide range of oil emulsions. The VeruTEK products have;
- Increased production rates
- Reduced cost of water treatment operations
- Achieved separation in emulsions that could not be broken using other products
In addition the VeruTEK products are much safer than the chemicals they replaced; they can be applied without respirators, are non corrosive and non hazardous.
The photos below show the degree of water separation achieved during the treatment screening tests. The treatments resulting in the greatest degree of separation and cleanest water phase were selected for full scale use.
