Hilltop Enterprises Inc. (West Chester, PA) recently secured its first project as a strategic partner for VeruTEK Technologies.

Hilltop Enterprises Inc, a national, research-driven, soil remediation provider and brokerage company, operates its TEVET® thermal soil remediation system throughout the world, directly and through their venture partners.  Hilltop became a VeruTEK partner in April 2010 and on May 27 secured its initial project utilizing VeruTEK technology.

This contract calls for a Thermal Surfactant Enhanced Ex Situ Chemical Oxidation (Thermal S-ESCO) Laboratory Treatability and Optimization Study for impacted soil from a site in Pennsylvania.
The contaminants of concern (COCs) for this treatability study are eight VOCs, two SVOCs, and three chlorinated pesticides.  Three Thermal S-ESCO processes will be tested in this study:  Thermal S-ESCO with persulfate, Thermal S-ESCO with persulfate/peroxide and Thermal SESCO with alkaline persulfate.

The study will contain four phases -

1. Characterization of representative site materials including site soil and DNAPL
2. Thermal Desorption/solubilization enhancement of target COC's
3. Dissolution/oxidation of COC's in the emulsion phase using Thermal S-ESCO
4. Thermal S-ESCO batch soil tests with Summa Canister gas phase sampling

Non-toxic "green" nanoparticles

In vitro biocompatibility of nanoscale zerovalent iron particles (NZVI) synthesized using tea polyphenols

Mallikarjuna N. Nadagouda, Alicia B. Castle, Richard C. Murdock, Saber M. Hussain and Rajender S. Varma

A green protocol was used for the rapid generation of nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) particles using tea polyphenols. The NZVI particles were subsequently examined for in vitro biocompatibility using the human keratinocyte cell (HaCaT) line as a representative skin exposure model. The cells were exposed to NZVI for time periods of 24 and 48 h. Biocompatibility was assessed using the methyl tetrazolium, or MTS, (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2 H-tetrazolium)) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays to determine in vitro cytotoxicity. The evaluation of mitochondrial function (MTS) and membrane integrity (LDH) in human keratinocytes showed that these green synthesized NZVI particles were nontoxic in the human keratinocytes exposed when compared with control samples synthesized using a borohydride protocol. In fact, in most cases, these green nanoparticles induced a prolific response in the cellular function even at the highest concentration (100g ml-1).
